1. HOW DID YOU GUYS GET STARTED AS A BAND?
We were all in different bands, and then we weren’t and then we were all in one band with other people and then we weren’t and then we were just in a band ourselves and made better music without them.
But seriously, Kathryn and I have been writing for a long time together and about a year ago the line up came to be as it is now and we’ve been gigging and stuff since.
2. HOW DID YOU GUYS COME UP WITH LITTLE BUDDHA?
There’s two parts to that story. We used to be called something else, Bed Head. We were asked by a record label to change our name because of another band called Bed Head that didn’t like us being called Bed Head. So we decided to change our name.
Kathryn and I had just watched a movie called Little Buddha by Bernardo Bertolucci and the soundtrack which is amazing by Ryuichi Sakamoto and I said we can’t call ourselves after a Keanu Reeves movie, that’s just silly. So we discussed it all the way to Manchester which is about 250 miles from here and we arrived in Manchester to do some recording and looked to our left and there was an Indonesian take-away called Little Buddha with a big neon sign in the window saying “Little Buddha” and I said, “that’s a sign.” So we went with that.
3. WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
Kathryn: film score, Patti Smith Band, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Bjork
Grant: Jazz Background: John Coltrane, Miles Davis.
Gus: Classics: the doors, pink floyd, elliot smith.
Ian: anything music full of passion
4. WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU GUYS?
We’re going to hopefully take out some time towards the end of the year to record. We’ve got maybe about a dozen songs ready for the studio. We are also very fortunate. This will be our first time actually working with a producer from the start, a gentlemen by the name of Joe Foster. He’s worked with a lot of big bands in the past like My Bloody Valentine and now he’s working with us. We’re really excited.
5. DO YOU GUYS PREFER RECORDING OR GIGGING?
Grant: All of the above. We love performing, but I think it’s like once you’ve been on the road for too long you can’t wait to get back in the studio and when you’re in the studio too long you can’t wait to get back out of the road. You need both.
6. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AS A BAND?
Grant: Um, it’s all been a highlight for me because I love my band so much!
Gus: Playing the Penn Festival. It was fantastic. It was so big it had it’s own zip code.
7. Do you plan on doing any shows internationally?
We toured the states a couple of years ago, unfortunately not with Gus or Julian.
8. Where all did you go?
We started off in Brooklyn, then we went to Connecticut, then to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, to Chicago, then to Alabama, to Boston, and then back to New York.
9. What is your favorite song that you guys have written.
Grant: That’s like asking me to choose between my children. That’s an unfair question. I think probably “Car” at the moment because it has a MASSIVE bass solo at the beginning.
Kathryn: I think my favorite one at the moment has to be “Wake Up.” It’s quite new and it’s going to be on our next album. It’s a sort of a creepy grownup fairytale with wolves…the imagery is quite dark. It’s got something and is reminiscent of 60’s movies.
